This climactic triptych is an authentic Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock print dated between 1807-1865 from the Edo Period. ‘Edo’ is the former name of ‘Tokyo’ and the period is characterized by economic growth, peace and popular enjoyment of arts and culture.
This print depicts an interior kabuki scene with three figures. The male figure in the center is known to be an actor in the role of Hanakawado Sukeroku, from the play Sukeroku. It is recognized as one of eighteen great plays. The woman on the left is recognized as wife and the woman on the right is recognized as a high-ranking courtesan called Shiratama.
