RARE Antique Triptych Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints from Edo Period

$2,000.00Price

RARE Antique Triptych Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints from Edo Period. This spectacular triptych is an authentic Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print from 1807-1865 from the Edo Period. ‘Edo’ is the former name of ‘Tokyo’ and the period is characterized by economic growth, peace and popular enjoyment of arts and culture.

This print depicts kabuki (a form of traditional Japanese dance and drama) outdoor scene with four figures. Actors in kabuki theatre wore elaborate costume and makeup, and used props such as fans in symbolic exaggerated gestures. Despite the age of the original print, costume pattern details are exquisite. The stage is set against a large background of a pine tree and branches of cherry blossoms- symbolizing rebirth and renewal in Japanese nature.

Framed under Glass.
